چکیده
This article provides a review of the recent progress in understanding and predicting additives-induced drag reduction (DR) turbulent wall-bounded shear flows. We focus on friction losses by dilute addition high-molecular weight polymers and/or fibers to flowing liquids. Although it has long been reasoned that dynamical interactions between polymers/fibers turbulence are responsible for DR, was not until recently made elucidating these detail. Advancements come largely from numerical simulations viscoelastic detailed measurements flows polymer/fiber solutions. Their impact current mechanics prediction DR is discussed, perspectives further advancement knowledge provided.

This paper presents a theoretical study on the velocity distribution and the friction factor of boundary layer flows with polymer additives starting from the concept of “stress deficit.” A novel method of order of magnitude analysis is developed, which converts the governing equations of boundary layer flow into a solvable ordinary differential equation, thus the total shear stress distribution...
متن کاملA Role of Elastic Energy in Turbulent Drag Reduction by Polymer Additives
In the present study, the mechanism of turbulent drag reduction by polymer additives in a fully developed channel ow is investigated using direct numerical simulation. In order to see the elastic e ect on turbulent drag reduction, the dilute polymer solution is expressed with an Oldroyd-B model which shows a linear elastic behavior. Simulations are carried out by changing the Weissenberg number...
متن کاملDrag reduction by polymer additives in decaying turbulence.
We present results from a systematic numerical study of decaying turbulence in a dilute polymer solution by using a shell-model version of the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic and Peterlin equations. Our study leads to an appealing definition of the drag reduction for the case of decaying turbulence. We exhibit several new results, such as the potential-energy spectrum of the polymer, hith...
متن کاملPolymer flexibility and turbulent drag reduction.
Polymer-induced drag reduction is the phenomenon by which the friction factor of a turbulent flow is reduced by the addition of small amounts of high-molecular-weight linear polymers, which conformation in solution at rest can vary between randomly coiled and rodlike. It is well known that drag reduction is positively correlated to viscous stresses, which are generated by extended polymers. Rod...
